I think Painter is a good coach with a crappy team in an area that is getting tougher and tougher to recruit in. His recruiting advantage over IU is gone now. The Hummel class was spectacular, but you can only ride those horses for so long.

Rebuilding due to somebody else's sanctions and rebuilding due to your own recruiting inadequacies are different things. But yeah, I agree, good coaches can have bad seasons.
