Ohio State recruit Jamel Turner was wounded in a shooting late Friday night in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio.

According to police reports, Turner was shot in his ankle and hip while traveling in a car along Interstate 680. His injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening. Turner was the passenger in the car, and the driver also suffered a gunshot wound to his hand.

WYTV Channel 33 in Youngstown reported that a bag of marijuana and two handguns were found in the car Turner rode in. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the driver of the car, 32-year-old Ramses Terry, has been arrested several times for gun and drug crimes.

Turner, a defensive end who signed with Ohio State in February, has a troubled past. After being declared academically ineligible at Ursuline High School in Youngstown, he transferred to Fork Union Military Academy, only to be dismissed last month. Buckeyes head coach Jim Tressel said Turner has been working to complete his high school degree so he can enroll at Ohio State this summer.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police say an Ohio State football recruit Jamel Turner is in critical condition and a 17-year-old girl is dead after both were shot multiple times early Saturday morning in Youngstown.

Turner, a defensive end who played high school ball at Ursuline High School in his native Youngstown, signed with the Buckeyes in February.

Coach Jim Tressel issued a statement Saturday night saying, "I'm so sad to hear of Jamel's misfortune. I have not communicated with Jamel, but am certainly praying for him at this time."

Turner was ruled academically ineligible before graduating from Ursuline, and enrolled at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, where he played football last fall. But he left the academy earlier this year.

Sad story. Even more sad given the circumstances around this one. He was not at fault at all other than being "at the wrong place at the wrong time."

I could be wrong, but from what I've been told the girl that died was his girlfriend? So sad and he was shot through the neck. He will never play football again but should live. He has a troubled past and I dont know if the 4 year old child is his child, but I hope he gets his life together.

Ohio State recruit Jamel Turner apparently will survive multiple gunshot wounds suffered early Saturday.

According to two sources close to Turner, the 18-year-old was upgraded to critical but stable condition yesterday morning. The sources said his life was in serious danger after the shooting, but if he made it through Saturday night, it was a good sign.

One source also said Turner's family now has requested that no more information be given out.

Turner is in Youngstown's St. Elizabeth Health Center after the shooting, in which a 17-year-old girl was killed. According to reports, police have a suspect but have made no arrests.

Turner is a defensive end from Youngstown Ursuline High School whose status as a member of the 2010 class was seriously in doubt even before this incident.

It's unknown whether he graduated from high school after he left Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy in the spring. Turner then was shot and suffered minor injuries in Youngstown in April.
